ABOUT THE PROCESS

All of the interviews I conducted for this survey were recorded via one-hour Zoom sessions held between January and April 2021.

The same questions were used for each interview, although sometimes questions were omitted if they didn’t feel applicable. Sometimes interviewees didn’t speak at length about certain subjects, and conversations often organically led to different topics altogether.

The people chosen for this survey can be grouped into performance innovators, field leaders, thought leaders, and field donors — with plenty of overlap in those categories.

Interviews were transcribed and edited to create profiles of each arts worker.  They are organized and edited for efficiency, and I believe that in reading them, you will come to the same conclusions I have.
There was no way to start these interviews except by asking people how they were doing. It almost felt like a ridiculous question to ask at that moment, but it also felt like the only important one.  How’s it been going? Are you alright? What do you need to be alright? How do you think we can get there?

These interviews were personal and often emotional. There was harmony of opinions, and there was also great discord. It was all beautiful music, though.

Hidden in these profiles are thoughtful reflections, deep wisdom, radical ideas, radical honesty, and such wonderful hope.
